History of the Physics Department
Ege University was established in 1955 in Izmir, West coast of Turkey. It is the fourth university of the modern Turkish republic. Science faculty started to serve in 1961, including the Physics-Chemistry-Biology, Mathematics-Astronomy, Physics-Mathematics, and Physics-Chemistry programs. The faculty also hosted the chairs of Experimental and Theoretical Physics. Later, the chairs were transformed by regulation of the higher education system and turned into the Department of Physics in 1977.
In 2010, the department updated its education system according to Bologne Process and started to apply European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The education duration for a bachelor's degree is eight terms and 240 ECTS. To graduate, students must complete a minimum of 176 ECTS (75%) compulsory and 64 ECTS (25%) electives. 30% of the mandatory courses are in English (73 ECTS), and 70% of them (103 ECTS) must be in Turkish.
The physics department includes five subdivisions, General Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Nuclear Physics, Solid State Physics, and Mathematical Physics, with its broad range of laboratory options and experienced academic personnel. The department provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for both national and international students.
